Joanne Grant, An Important Voice in the Early Documentation of the Civil Rights Movement, Dies
We are terribly saddened by the news that filmmaker, journalist and commentator
Joanne Grant passed away Sunday, January 9 in New York City. A former assistant to W. E. B. DuBois and an activist who documented the grassroots efforts behind the civil rights movement, Ms. Grant wrote
Black Protest, an analysis of black resistance from 1619 on. One of the first books to trace the origins of the civil rights movement, it remains required reading in many classes on African-American history.
First Run/Icarus Films is very proud to distribute Grant's award-winning, landmark documentary film
FUNDI: THE STORY OF ELLA BAKER, about an unsung matriarch of the civil rights movement.
